I had the absolute pleasure of having a closet audit performed by Paul of Urbanite | Suburbanite. We spent 2 hours going through all of my clothes and figuring out what was working and what wasn't. I knew he was golden when, after asking who my style icon was (Kate Middleton!!!), he looked around the room and said "Yeah, you need to let that go. You're way edgier and those Kate Middleton pieces look like a costume". Truth.
I always felt like I needed to have this polished "business/business casual" wardrobe, but a) the pieces did feel like a costume ("Business Casual Barbie Doll") and b) I never actually wore them because...drumroll...they felt like a costume.
Hearing him give me permission to edge it up a bit resulted in 2 bags of clothes going to Goodwill. And I only had a half of a closet worth of clothes to begin with. So that I wouldn’t be forced to walk around naked, he then sent me a list of clothing items I should have to fill in the holes. It’s been so much fun using the list to find items I actually love. For the first time in years, I’ve felt like me when I get dressed in the morning. Not some costumed, fake version.
So how does this relate to you?
A lot of times I get resistance when going through closets and hear "But I'm not going to have anything to wear!". I think having a session with Paul to look forward to, where he will help you define your style, figure out what pieces you're missing and create looks for you, may give you the confidence to finally shed all of those sartorial mistakes that have been hanging in the back of the closet since 1989.
Here’s to clean closets and clothes you feel amazing in!
