Most kitchens I see have one. That’s fine. We do too, however I don’t think it’s fair to call it a junk drawer. What we’re looking for here is having a drawer full of “things I need but that defy organizing logic and don’t really belong in a kitchen, yet I always need them when I’m near the kitchen”.
For us that looks like a drawer with:
- Packing tape
- A baggie full of dead batteries
It’s fine to have a “junk” drawer, but maybe we should rename it “miscellaneous” drawer; for things we need often, generally when we’re near the kitchen.
Ready to tame your “miscellaneous” drawer?
Set the timer for 20, pull everything out and put it on the counter.
You know the drill:
- Sort like items together
- Toss any trash
- Donate any duplicates
- Move anything that doesn’t to elsewhere in the house where it’s supposed to live
- Put everything you’re keeping back in the drawer. If it still looks messy, consider parting with a few more items
- Arrange what’s left in a pleasing manner
