Simplified 365 - Day 14: Boxed & Bagged Food

Feeling satisfied with your clean refrigerator?  Stoked on your spices?  For the next few days we are going to tackle the rest of the food.  Not the organizing, just the composting or donating of anything that is expired or unwanted.

Set that timer for 20 and let’s start with your boxed and bagged food.  

Look for:

  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Snacks
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • Tea
  • Coffee

Leave the jars and cans be; we will tackle those tomorrow.

Begin by pulling everything out from one shelf at a time, moving clockwise through your kitchen and from top to bottom in each cabinet that has boxed food.   Wipe down each shelf with a simple vinegar spray as you go. If doing all of the food at once sounds scary, commit to one shelf or 5 minutes.  I encourage you to keep going though - you may find it a bit fun once you get started! 

Now that your first shelf is empty, let’s look at those boxes.  Go by the expiration dates.  I know everyone has strong opinions on whether food is really expired by those dates (the food is probably fine), BUT it’s a good tool to gauge how long that food has been in your pantry.  Generally boxes, jars and cans of food have an expiration date that is at least 1 year if not more in the future from the time of purchase.  So, if that box of cereal expires next month, it’s probably been in there at least 11 months.  If it’s still almost full, that’s a sign you probably didn’t care for it.  Time for it to go. 

As you finish each shelf and put the food back on it, you can get a jump on organizing by putting the boxed foods together on one side of the shelf and the canned and jarred food together on the other side.
