Simplified 365: The Clothes - Day 1: Before You Begin

Just like we did with the kitchen, and will continue to do throughout the year for each category, we are going to spend 20 minutes today thinking about our closet, dresser and wardrobe.  Specifically, what we feel like when we open it’s doors.  What we feel like when we get dressed.  What works, what doesn’t.

Grab your notebook and answer the following questions:

1.  What do I hate about my closet and wardrobe? (Crammed full? Disorganized? Chaos? Wardrobe isn’t” me”?)

*

*

*

2.  Why? (I feel like I have nothing to wear.  I can’t find what I need.)

*

*

*

3.  What feelings do my closet and wardrobe bring up? (Overwhelmed? Sad? Anxious? Embarrassed?)

*

*

*

4. How do I want to feel in my closet and wardrobe? (Empowered? Stylish? Content?)

*

*

*

5. When it’s time to get dressed, what specific areas make you shudder?  The clothes themselves? The space or lack thereof? The volume of stuff? The drawers in the dresser that don’t slide well?

*

*

*

Now that you’ve answered those questions, I want you to keep a few questions in mind that you will be asking yourself as you sort and possibly donate clothing.  The first step will be to set aside the items in each group that you actually love.  Your favorite tee, the stellar pair of jeans, etc.  For the rest of the clothing that you don’t absolutely love, ask these questions:

  1. Do I like it?
  2. Does it fit?
  3. Do I feel like I spent “good money” and can’t let it go?
  4. Does it make me think of a bad person, place or situation?
  5. Is it stained?
  6. Have I not worn it because it needs to be repaired?
  7. Is it aspirational? (I’ll fit it in one day. I’ll go back to that corporate job one day. I’ll have another kid one day.)

Now is the time to let go of clothing that doesn’t make you feel fabulous.  You’ve got this. Grab a few bags for donations and we will get started tomorrow.  Also have a bag labeled “rags” on hand.  Goodwill will take clothing that has holes and recycle them if you put them in a rag bag.
