Simplified 365: The Bedroom - Day 1: Before You Begin

We are starting the 3rd month and moving on to The Bedroom.  If you're just joining us, start with The Kitchen and The Clothes, then join us in the bedroom. This is your haven, your sanctuary from the crazy, busy, always-on world out there. But does your bedroom currently feel like a sanctuary? Or more like a war zone?

During the month, we will tackle your bedside tables, laundry issues, the master bathroom, and any other little trouble spots you may be having.

Today’s work is to think about these questions and write your answers down in your journal.

1.  When I walk into my bedroom, how do I feel? (Overwhelmed? Disorganized? Nervous?)

*

*

*

2.  Why? (There is too much stuff.  Nothing has a home. I can’t get a handle on it.)

*

*

*

4. How do I want to feel in my bedroom? (Restful? Peaceful? Relaxed?)

*

*

*

5. As you’re getting ready for your day or getting ready for bed, what specific things make you shudder?  (The clothes piled on the chair. The dust. The way the closet door won’t close all the way. I knock things off my nightstand every night.)

Ok, now we have our general feelings in mind, let’s sit with them for a bit.  So you’re feeling a bit unsettled in your bedroom? A bit frustrated? Are there any limiting beliefs that come up? What stories are you telling yourself?

  • I just don’t have time to clean this.
  • I’ll never be organized.
  • What’s the difference, it’s just going to get dirty again anyway.
  • No one else will help me keep it clean.
  • No one appreciates it when it’s clean.
  • The furniture is old, why bother cleaning?

Maybe it’s time to replace some of those thoughts with new ones:

  • I deserve a clean, restful place in which to recharge from the day
  • I can best help others by having a sanctuary in which to recharge from the day
  • I will be healthiest when I get quality sleep, and my surroundings can positively impact that.
  • What I take care of will take care of me.
  • Knowing where everything is in my bedroom will help me begin my day effortlessly.

After you’ve sat with these questions and thought about why you want to organize your room and what you’d like to gain from that, go ahead and put your notebook away. We will begin the organizing tomorrow!  For bonus points, write a few words describing how you want to feel on your mirror with a dry erase pen.  Something like “Relaxed and Calm”.  It can be helpful to have your “why” writ large to remind you to keep going with this.
